This medal shows Mary Magdalene with long flowing hair. She is holding a jar of scented oil to remind us that she was the woman in the Bible who anointed Jesus? feet with a jar of oil, washed them with her tears and then dried them with her hair. The Latin inscription reads "S MAGD ORA P N" which is short for "Sancta Magdalene Ora Pro Nobis", (St Magdalene Pray For Us).
Mary Magdalene is known in the Bible as the woman who reformed her life when she began to follow Jesus. She is associated with the woman from whom Jesus cast out seven demons and who washed his feet with her tears and dried them with her long hair in thanksgiving for forgiveness of her sins. She was with the virgin Mary at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified. She went back to his tomb on the following Sunday and was one of the first to see the risen Christ. She is typically shown in art as a woman with long hair holding a jar of perfume or a skull while deep in contemplation.
