The armed Forces of our country have a rich and glorious military history, during which various views on their construction and organization were formed at certain stages. Undoubtedly, the peak of development of the domestic Armed Forces in terms of their combat capability and combat readiness fell on the Soviet period of our history.
The reforms carried out in the modern Armed Forces encourage us to turn to the historical experience of the past. A comprehensive study of the history of the Russian Armed Forces is of great importance for understanding and assessing the ways of development of the army, and for the history of the state as a whole. Military-historical heritage of the Armed Forces is an important tool in the design and development of the theory of military construction, its implementation and further strengthening in modern conditions.
Despite the fact that in this direction many generations of historians have done a lot of research using different methodological approaches, a number of problems to date remains poorly understood. One of these problems is the development of the organizational structure of the Soviet Armed Forces. This is especially true of the period 1918-1945, when there was the creation, subsequent formation and development of the red Army — the Armed Forces of the new socialist state.
In this paper, for the first time an attempt is made to conduct a comprehensive study of the organizational and staff structure (the Central apparatus, military authorities, as well as all types of troops, services, their structural units) of the red Army in the period 1918-1945 on the basis of archival documents, including those previously inaccessible to researchers.
