Antique Dark Brown Glazed Stoneware Pottery Beer Spirits Bottle

Description

This is a very heavy, stoneware brown bottle. I would like to say that it is from the 1800's of the ginger beer bottle era. The thing that is stumping me is the lip - it is wide and flat - as if there was a second piece that wire clamped down? But there are no scratches on the neck. The bottle is about 7 inches in height and weighs 1#5oz.
Is this European or American? I could not find any references or identifying markings.
